From the Director
March/April '06

Now that we have been open for a few months, we have had an opportunity to measure the public's reaction. It seems the new FIA building excees all expectations. The open, light-filled spaces, ample parking and easy access have created an atmosphere that visitors are comfortable in, whether for a quiet afternoon of conteplative solitude or for a large gathering. Attendance has been very high as people enjoy events, exhibitions, films, and classes and visit new features like the Fleckenstein Video Gallery, Isabel Hall, and The Café.

The FIA is very fortunate to be able to continue expanding with the construction of Phase II, which is underway. Phase II additions will include a temporary exhibition gallery, three permanent collection galleries to the east of the FIA, and first floor collection management spaces to the south. Construction of the Phase II wing has made it necessary to cover the existing windows on the east side of the building so the idyllic setting created in the Phase I will be affected temporarily by further expansion.

As constuction continues it will be necessary to limit access to or close parts of the building. In June, FIA galleries will need to close to relocate and secure the artwork during construction. Retail and lobby spaces will close in August for the installation of an 88-foot fresco mural commissioned by the FIA and funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation. Meeting and programming spaces will remain available through July 30th and the school will remain open throughout construction. By this fall, Phase II additions will be completed.

Even with all the activity, the FIA is still a comfortable, attractive experience where you can enjoy the galleries, the studios, a Starbucks coffee at The Café and a visit to the Museum Shop, and Art Sales and Rental. I hope to see you soon.
