Drawing Friends: Hedda Sterne’s Portraititis
Ford Graphics Gallery
Sponsored by JP Morgan Chase
This exhibition will feature twenty pencil, ink and charcoal drawings by the Romanian-born, American artist Hedda Sterne. Sterne first came to prominence in the 1930s when she exhibited with the Surrealists in Paris. Sterne immigrated to America in the late 1930s, and attained national attention during the 1940s and 1950s when she exhibited with Abstract Expressionists Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. Several of the drawings in the exhibition are portraits of Sterne’s inner circle, including Elaine de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, and Sterne’s husband, the notable artist and illustrator, Saul Steinberg.
