Children's Classes

In these classes, children ages 4–12 attend independently. Parents are invited to enroll in Family Block classes, have coffee in The Café, tour the FIA galleries, or relax in the student lounge.

Ages 4-5

Dinosaur Romp
Rebecca Andrus
Romp and stomp to a dinosaur beat as you learn about line, shape, color, texture, and form. Assume a dino identity through mask making and creative play and draw your favorite dinos, create sculptures, and make a dino mural out of mixed media. If dinosaurs are your favorite, you’ll have a roaring good time!

3-D Flower Power

Discover flower power! Learn different aspects of sculpture by observing roses, lilies, and more. Look for artworks with brilliant flowers in the FIA Galleries. Explore a wide variety of materials from seeds and yarn, feather to collage. Create floral still life sculptures with wire and air-dry clay, and begin to see flowers everywhere you go. Come blossom!

Tiger Stripes - Designing from Nature

Georgia O’Keeffe said, “...to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time... I’ll paint what I see, what the Flower is to me.” Utilizing line, shape, color, pattern, and contrast, this class will focus on developing observational skills while drawing and designing from nature. Experiment with pencils, water-soluble oil pastels, scratch board, colored pencils, and more.Visit the FIA Galleries to discover how other artists observe!

Circus

Bookmaking

Come and tell your own story. In this book making class, we will create, write, and illustrate our own books! We will explore all sorts of books from comic books to pop-up books. We will express ourselves through writing and materials such as colored pencils, graphite and paint to turn colorful illustrations into beautiful books to add to our friends’ and family’s libraries.

Dynamic 3-D

While experimenting with traditional and non-traditional materials, artists will add to their visual vocabulary, gain an appreciation for and an understanding of form, learn about the methods and materials used by sculptors in the FIA collection, and stretch their ability to think three dimensionally. Students will explore sculptural processes-carving, clay relief, wire figure, mobile making, and beaded abstract scapes.

After School Clay
Instructor To Be Announced
Develop ceramic skills in handbuilding techniques. Create sculpture using coiling, pinching, and slab building methods to make a variety of forms-from functional to sculptural. Emphasis will be placed on surface decoration using texture, underglazes, slips, and low fire glazes. These techniques provide opportunities to express individual creativity, and the projects are geared to the interests and abilities of the students.

Ceramic & Glass Mosaics

Use fun tools and design/construct your own ceramic and glass tile mosaic! Practice shaping thin pieces while we study the principles of color and graphic design. Tour the galleries to look for examples of decorative mosaic in the FIA Galleries. Rollers are used for scoring, and goggles and gloves will protect eyes and fingers! Come discover for yourself!
