Claudia DeMonte: Everyday Matters
Ford Graphics Gallery
This exhibition presents a selection of Claudia DeMonte’s large prints and scratchboard drawings that examine the role of women in society. Her large digitally produced prints are silhouettes of iconic female figures from the history of art, including Venus of Willendorf, the Snake Goddess of Crete, Queen Nefertiti, as well as silhouettes of DeMonte herself, shown painting, jogging, and drying dishes. Each figure is filled with images of milagros, the small pewter Mexican charms of everyday objects that are invested with spiritual and magical power. DeMonte chose milagros such as tea kettles, handbags, perfume bottles, tennis rackets, artist palettes, and other items of personal significance that connect the everyday with the timeless.
