Promises of Freedom: Selections from the
Arthur Primas Collection

Hodge & Temporary Exhibition Galleries

Sponsored by
The Community Foundation of Greater Flint

The Arthur Primas Collection is one of the largest and most important collections of African American art in the country. The artists in the exhibition, including Charles White, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and Hughie Lee-Smith created art that speaks to experiences on individual and collective levels, reflecting both international and domestic influences.

As Promises of Freedom attests, African American Art cannot be reduced to a single definition. It is a complex mix of sources, inspirations and goals. This exhibition offers a glimpse into the private desires and public proclamations of the artists represented. Their artworks disdain oppression, claim individuality, give shape to spirituality, persevere in the quest for beauty, and represent the search for freedom.
