Through drawing exercises, students develop a strong understanding of the intentions that established each art movement, as well as, gain insight into the relationships between movements. Focus on investigating the creative process. With stress placed on the act of drawing rather than the finished product, students are in a position to explore and develop creative strategies. Pencil drawing exercises will provide students with new experiences in representation.

Through the study and exploration of a single subject, students will create different translations of the subject through multiple techniques. A variety of mediums ranging from pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel and paint, will offer students various stylistic approaches and perspectives.

In response to music, directives, adjectives and restrictions, students will develop a personal vocabulary of marks, lines, shapes and patterns. Students will implement a variety of marks to create a three-dimensional illusion of space using pen and ink. Whether working from imagination or from a photograph, students will create images by fusing their unique marks with their knowledge of value and contrast.
