Docent Program

What is a Docent?

The word “docent” comes from the Latin word docere meaning “to teach.” The title “Docent” is awarded to volunteers who explain art and museum exhibitions to the public.

Though at times a Docent is part teacher and part entertainer, teaching credentials and public speaking experience are not required. If you have the interest, enthusiasm and time, the
FIA's Education Department will make sure you receive the training you need.

Being a Docent means building the foundation for a rewarding museum experience for each visitor as well as having the opportunity to grow and learn.

The FIA houses over 6,500 objects in its permanent collection, spanning many centuries and cultures.

Docents play an integral part in presenting these works to the public, and their hard work is greatly appreciated by all.

What are the Program Requirements?

Membership in the Flint Institute of Arts and completion of the docent training program are required. In addition, Docents attend docent membership meetings held the first Monday of each month and other training sessions scheduled periodically.

Beginning Docents take an intensive introductory course in September covering information on the collection and tour techniques.

One of the best parts of being a Docent is the continuing education program. These sessions are designed to enrich Docents’knowledge relating to a wide array of subjects concerning art and museum education.

How Much Commitment is Expected of Me?

Docents are expected to contribute an average of eight hours per month. This includes participation in training sessions as well as conducting tours.
