Alexander Calder is considered one of the most original and innovative sculptors of the twentieth-century. His magical abstract works, whether large or small, fixed or mobile, possess a gentle grace and timeless quality. Calder's sculptures reveal a love for modern materials and embody contemporary notions of movement, chance and balance. They also reveal a whimsical and often humorous quality that reflects Calder's life and his response to the beauty and simplicity of his surroundings.Using a relatively limited visual vocabulary and a palette of primary colors, Calder achieved an enormous variety in his work, ranging from small tabletop pieces to monumental outdoor sculpture. Calder was also prolific in two-dimensional art, drawing and painting throughout his career. In the late 1950s, he became interested in printmaking, particularly lithography, a medium well suited to his preference for bright colors. Pyramid et Spirals presents a lively array of simple geometric shapes rendered in vibrant color, a compositional theme Calder depicted frequently and with great effectiveness in his graphic art. The slightly off-kilter arrangement of solid forms coupled with dizzying spirals and sharply contrasting colors animates this image with a tangible sense of energy similar to the movement in his sculptures.
