Rice grain porcelain is made from a technique where small openings or holes are carved through unfired porcelain then filled with a translucent glaze. These openings form designs, ranging from organic and geometric patterns to text, figures, and animals. Held to the light, this translucent pattern gives a lacy effect. It is called rice grain because the perforations are of a similar size and shape as a grain of rice.
