One of a pair depicting a triumphal procession (a grand parade featuring a victorious public figure in a chariot), this cabinet illustrates the triumph of sacred love. The central panel depicts a pope seated in a chariot pulled by winged horses. He is being crowned with a wreath by a flying cupid, and his arrival is heralded by a winged figure blowing a trumpet. Religious figures, including a cardinal and a bishop, accompany the pope’s chariot. Dressed in his ecclesiastical finery, the pope wears the papal tiara (three-tiered crown) that represents the trinity as well as his authority on earth. Two additional panels flank the central triumphal scene, each featuring a male figure: on the left, a youthful man is seated on a horse holding a mirror; on the right, a much older man is seated on the back of a cow. The identity of these figures and their meaning remains unknown.
