Gift of Viola E. Bray, 2005.134.2

The carved features on the shaped backs of these sixteenth-century French sgabelli chairs may have been based on drawings of acrobats by Italian and French artists working in the court of King Francis I at Fontainebleau. Six semi-clad figures twist and turn in the confined space above two dolphin heads. Though in the same format, each back is unique with figures in slightly different poses. The seats are also shaped and have a fluted rim. They rest on two carved supports with lion’s-paw feet composed of S-shaped scrolls flanking a blank convex oval.
