Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274) was an Italian Dominican priest of the Catholic Church, as well as an immensely influential philosopher and theologian. He was the foremost proponent of natural theology and his influence on Western thought is considerable–in fact, much of modern philosophy was conceived in agreement with, or as a reaction against, his ideas in the areas of ethics, natural law, and political theory. The artist of this painting is unknown, but its deeply religious impact derives from its somber use of color and dynamic textured paint.
