Joan Miró was born in Barcelona, Spain. He studied art at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, but his parents pressured him to become a businessman. He worked unhappily as an accountant for nearly two years before he had a nervous breakdown and his parents finally accepted his choice to be an artist. His earliest works show the influence of Fauvism and Cubism. He moved to Paris in 1921 because it was the center of the art world at that time. In 1924, he met André Breton and began painting in a Surrealist style along with his close friends André Masson and Max Ernst. During this time, he helped to develop automatic drawing as a way to undo previously established techniques in painting. He did not completely integrate himself into the Surrealist group, however, and by 1930 he had developed his own unique style characterized by brilliant colors, organic forms drawn with sharp lines and flattened picture planes. Throughout his career, he continued to pursue his own interests in the art world, including Expressionism and Color Field painting. Miró’s work gained international recognition in the 1930’s. From 1940 to 1948 he returned to Spain where he experimented in different media, including sculpture, ceramics and murals. Late in life, he suffered from heart disease and respiratory problems. Miró died bedridden at his home in Palma, Majorca, Spain in 1983 at the age of ninety.
