Born in Amsterdam in 1921, Karel Appel became one of the most recognized artists from the Netherlands in the second half of the twentieth century. He completed his first painting at the age of fourteen and was admitted to the Amsterdam Royal Academy of Fine Arts at nineteen. Besides painting, Appel experimented with many different artistic media throughout his career, producing several illustrations, sculptures, ceramics, and graphic works as well.
