In Sueño y Mentira de Franco (Dreams and Lies of Franco) Picasso presents a searing attack on Spanish General Francisco Franco and his fascist troops. General Franco rose to power during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). With the aid of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy he overthrew the Second Republic of Spain. Implementing an authoritarian regime Franco would exert complete control over the country. Many fled Spain and those who remained were subjected to military tribunals, resulting in thousands of deaths. Under his regime religion and language was restricted, labor unions were barred, the media was censored, and a vast network of police spies was created to watch Spanish citizens. Pablo Picasso made this print, one of a pair, in support of the Spanish Refugee Relief Campaign, intending the set of nine images to be cut up and sold as individual postcards, or as a folio edition containing both etchings and a poem by the artist. Prior to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July of 1936, Picasso had expressed no strong political interest. However, during the war, he dedicated himself to the fight against fascism, providing financial, artistic, and personal support to the opposition. Many of the images are reminiscent of his large-scale painting Guernica. Thematically both painting and etchings vent Picasso’s outrage over events reported during the Spanish Civil War. He depicts Franco as a traitor to Spanish tradition and a destroyer of its culture and people.
