Guest Lecturer: Benjamin Colman, DIA Associate Curator of American Art 

This lecture explores paintings from Visions of American Life to decipher the ways artists examined complex and competing visions of American politics, culture, and identity in their work.

Benjamin Colman joined the Detroit Institute of Arts as Associate Curator of American Art in 2015. His specialty is American decorative arts, design, and painting from the 17th to 20th centuries. He is a graduate of Yale and holds an MA from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture. Prior to joining the DIA, he worked at the Florence Griswold Museum, Historic Deerfield, and Yale University Art Gallery. He has published and curated exhibitions on topics from the broad history of American art including 17th- and 18th-century furniture, American Impressionism, modern art and design, and studio craft.
