Scraps of discarded papers, receipts, letters, restaurant menus, and pieces of wood bear the markings of Purvis Young’s unique visual lexicon through common imagery such as boats, horses, and warriors. Quick, expressive gestures define his compositions—reflecting the rawness that Young, as a homeless man, felt inside. Using what others have discarded, Young elevated them to a higher plane, giving them a new life and purpose. Featuring drawings as well as paintings, the works in this exhibition document the social unrest Young experienced in his hometown of Miami (Overtown neighborhood), Florida, and the marginalization of people of color collectively.
