While abstract expressionism was originally characterized as a style created by ultra-masculine male artists, there were a number of equally prolific female artists who were kept out of the art-historical spotlight. Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Sarah Kohn will discuss how abstract expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner were as innovative as their male counterparts. They also developed new techniques that helped shift the art world’s attention from European modernism to abstract expressionism in the United States.
