Jazz Night

Inspired by Surrealism
Matthew Fries, Guest Pianist
Aug 17 | 6p | Complimentary Admission

From paintings and sculpture to concertos and sonatas, artists often explore surreal themes such as dreams, fantasy, the uncanny, strange juxtapositions, and the manifestation of fears and desires in their artwork.

Join us during Late Night Thursdays for a performance by renowned composer, Matthew Fries, Professor of Jazz Piano at Western Michigan University, and winner of the 1997 Great American Jazz Piano Competition. His performance on the Steinway Concert Grand is inspired by the exhibition Beyond Dreams: Surrealism and Its Manifestations (open through August 20). During his performance, Mr. Fries will discuss the parallels between the Surrealist movement and jazz and the way they break the rules and rely on their intuition for improvisation.
