Guest Lecturer: Dr. Justin Sledge

“Alchemy” conjures up the sight of exotic bubbling chemicals, strange old tomes filled with symbolic riddles, and robed figures laboring in hidden laboratories. What was alchemy and how did it become the chemistry of today? Dr. Sledge introduces this long-enduring practice and varying alchemical schools, dispels common myths, presents a few famous alchemists, describes alchemical symbolism, and discusses where our understanding of alchemy as proto-science is today. His presentation is grounded in the history of alchemical art and symbolism. The topic will appeal to everyone from Harry Potter fans, to those interested in the history of science, as well as people interested in the esoteric/occult mysteries of spiritual transmutation.

Free and open to the public.
